1880 की गर्मी थी। अलबामा के एक छोटे से शहर में एक स्वस्थ बच्ची का जन्म हुआ। उसके माता-पिता उसे बहुत प्यार करते थे और उसका नाम हेलेन केलर रखा। एक दिन बच्ची बीमार पड़ गयी। उसका बुखार तेज रहता था। माता-पिता ने उसे बेहतर बनाने में मदद करने की पूरी कोशिश की। वे निराश हुए और कहा, “हम और कुछ नहीं कर सकते हैं। बच्चा जीवित नहीं रह सकता है।” हेलेन जीवित रही, लेकिन वह अपनी बीमारी के बाद वैसी नहीं थी। उसकी माँ ने कहा, “कुछ बहुत गलत है,” अंत में उन्हें पता चला कि क्या गलत था। बच्ची देखने और सुनने में असमर्थ थी।
